If you're a wine lover, then chances are you also collect wine. Once your wine collection begins to grow and your interest develops into a passion you'll need a space to store your growing collection!

Our interest in wine began many years ago and led us on a fascinating journey as we learned about cellaring techniques, temperature and humidity control, how wine ages and how light affects it.

That was when we built our first mini wine cellar in a closet.

Here at our mini wine cellars site we have many ideas to help you build your own wine cellar in the smallest of spaces.

When buying wine for collecting or for later drinking it is important to understand that wine is a living substance. Unless appropriate steps are taken for preservation it will spoil over time and wine storage requires many considerations due to the length of time many people may keep their bottles without opening them. It should also be remembered that top quality wines can and will improve with age but the majority of wine produced should be drunk young.

Typically wine is stored in glass bottles with a natural cork stopper to maintain freshness and as long as the integrity of the bottle and the cork are maintained the wine will be preserved. However, red, white and even fortified wine will begin to spoil if the wine storage is not appropriate. Heat, light, humidity and temperature fluctuations can all have a negative impact on wines as well as vibrations of the wine storage container.

Wine cellars are designed to protect the wine bottles from excessive light as well as to maintain a constant temperature and humidity level.

Before your start to build a wine cellar in your basement take into account any windows through which light can penetrate. All windows should be covered to prevent light from entering. Additionally, sunlight streaming in through windows can cause unwanted temperature fluctuations. The type of flooring in the wine storage facility also plays a role in the preservation effort as older buildings with wooden or dirt floors make it difficult to control humidity levels.

Of course, for the many people who do not have a basement to convert into a wine cellar there are many options to create a wine closet or a mini wine cellar in a cupboard beneath the stairs. We'll show you how.
